Your brain processes the world by chunking your day into manageable scenes, almost like chapters in a book. When you stay in one room, your brain keeps all the information relevant to that specific space readily available in your short-term memory.
However, the moment you pass through a doorway, your brain treats that physical threshold as an event boundary.
It decides that whatever happened in the previous room is officially old news. It files those thoughts away to make space for whatever might happen in the new location.
Why walking back actually works
In one experiment, participants were asked to carry objects from room to room in a virtual reality setting.
Sometimes they walked across a large room, and other times they walked through a doorway into a new room of the exact same size.
The researchers discovered that passing through the doorway caused people to forget what they were carrying far more often than simply walking the same distance across a single room. The physical door acted like a reset button for the brain.
This also explains why returning to the original room suddenly brings the thought back. By stepping back into the previous environment, you are giving your brain the original context it used to create the thought in the first place.
